When the Power of Love conquers the Love of Power, the world will then find peace. – Jimi Hendrix

This week’s critical thinking will focus on the essence of power. Power according to Webster’s Dictionary is defined as “the ability to control or influence someone or something.” This definition is very misleading and I consider it one of the major causes of the ills the world is having today. So according to Webster, if I want to be powerful, then I can only prove it by having control or influence over someone else. That is what I consider to be “offensive power.” The only problem is this type of power is limited as what goes around comes around. Sooner or later, somebody else will assume that same power over me. So allow me to redefine that definition for you. I define power as “the ability to put yourself in a state so that no one can have control or influence over you.” This eliminate the proof of being powerful, you just are. This is a form of divine power, which is eternal. If people were to embrace this definition into their psyche, the need to have control can easily be replaced by the need to connect. Connecting with other people will bring into alignment an ultimate power that includes everyone in taking part. This opens up for the different types of power to occur which will all be covered this week: The Power of Love, The Power of Choice, The Power of Presence, The Power of Questioning, and The Power of Faith w/ Action.

On Tuesday September 20, I had the ultimate pleasure of escorting my sister, Ms. ReGina Newkirk, who is the new Executive Director of the non-profit organization, Rocketown. Rocketown is designed for teenagers in the Nashville Metropolitan area to have an alternative place to go where they can feel safe and be themselves and participate in activities such as skateboarding and concert activities in a Christian environment. This non-profit organization is owned by well known Christian singer and songwriter Mr. Michael W. Smith. I had the opportunity and the pleasure to meet with him during the course of the fundraiser. Tony Dungy, the first African American head coach to win a Super Bowl and former head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, was the guest speaker. Tony Dungy was introduced by Jeff Fisher the head coach of the Tennessee Titans at the fundraising luncheon. Interestingly enough, during his opening presentation he removed his shirt and tie to reveal a jersey of Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts. The media went in the wrong direction with the purpose of his gesture. He did it in honor of Coach Dungy and all of his great accomplishments. I walked around with Coach Dungy and heard the press conference. He was interviewing the students about Rocketown and their experiences. He even was bold enough to interject himself into a game of dodgeball with them. He truly is a man with integrity, class and character. Everything positive that has been said about him in the media couldn’t be more true. I also got the chance to meet Chris Sanders and Freddie Scott both former Tenessee Titans football players. Hearing their remarks as for what Tony Dungy meant to them was very empowering and profound. The fundraiser was a wonderful and the opportunity to network and to meet with Coach Tony Dungy, Michael W. Smith, Chris Sanders and all the other like of people that were participating in the fundraiser event was incredible. And I give much kudos to my sister ReGina for doing a magnificent job and making sure everything came together and that the event was an absolute success.

I had the opportunity to go to Boston to serve as a key note speaker for the 20th anniversary reunion of the Rho Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Scholarship Gala Ball. The reunion was held 24-26 September 2009 on MIT’s campus in Cambridge, MA. It was an honor and a privilege to go back and meet all of the brothers that have come through the chapter since my departure and hear of the brothers’ careers and the successes they have had collectively. These brothers, graduates of MIT, Harvard, and Tufts, were charged with assignments in accordance with President Barack Obama’s education initiative to go out and help motivate others to study and become successful in their own lives. It was a fabulous weekend and the black tie affair was phenomenal. The graduate chapter of brothers from Bermuda came up and participated in the scholarship event. I was really happy and excited to be able to speak and participate in the event. An excerpt from that speech will be on the website.

The year 2009 has been an incredible journey for me. And last month has been absolutely unbelievable. So before we get into our critical thinking mode, let me first just share with you a couple things that has happened since we launched the book last month. First I had the opportunity to go to Los Angeles where I participated in a Social Media Conference that was organized by Ms. Sabrina Gibson who is also an author and motivational speaker, and lead by Joel Bauer. The Social Media Conference provided end to end management of conducting speaking engagements. It was absolutely phenomenal. At this incredible event, I got a chance to promote the book and do book signings. I got to meet a lot of very interesting people from around the country that have a lot of common ground and think along the same line. I also got a chance to meet and establish a relationship with Mr. Allen Miller who is a publicist and former publicist of Ferrah Fawcett. He has helped me to create a plan as far as moving forward with the motivational speaking and presentations. I also had the opportunity a few months before to meet and establish a great relationship with Ms. Elizabeth Elaine who is the media person and marketing person for Stevie Wonder. She also grew up and was a marketing person with Michael Jackson. She has given tremendous energy to the setting up for the promotion of the book, passing the information out to people and getting things set up such that when its time to move forward we can move forward confidently. I am so excited to have her as part of the team as well. I’ll take it as a blessing in the fact that I have two people who used to be the marketing folks for two celebrities that unfortunately passed on the same day. I’ll take the blessing for what it is and I’ll keep it moving. I must also thank Rachel Perlmutter and Terry Silberstein for setting up my Internet infrastructure making this blog effort possible. Your tremendous efforts are so appreciated. I also had the opportunity to visit my crew out in the extreme aerobics fit class which is taught and led by Mr. Izett Barnett and Mr. Steven Walker. I’ll like to thank them for the opportunity for me to come to the class to do a book signing promotion there too. I’ll also like to thank all my crew out there who allowed me to come out from out of town to join in the class and participate in the activities after class and just become a part of it even though I am doing special guest appearances from time to the time. So I’ll like to thank everybody out there for that.
